If you’re the type of person that enjoys an active lifestyle, then Abergavenny, gateway to the Beacons, is the place for you. Abergavenny has just been proposed to become the cycling capital of Wales. A lot of activities are focussed around the annual cycling festival in July, but you can ride the quiet roads around the town all year around. At the Guesthouse we are familiar with the needs of cyclists, namely somewhere safe to store your bikes, a recommendation for a pub and some pasta, and a hearty breakfast to get you going! Oh, and we may even have some spare ASOS cream, though please don’t ask Jen to apply it as refusal often offends…

Walkers are also most welcome, in fact a large proportion of our guests intend to use the Guesthouse as a base for walking around Abergavenny and the Brecon Beacons. There are hundreds of resources on the web, but we particularly like some of the routes on this site.

Best For – The most mountainous landscapes in Southern Britain with some of the best driving.
Distance – 75 miles
What to expect – A drive from the Monmouthshire town of Abergavenny to the village of Llangadog in Carmarthenshire’s Towy Valley passin Pen-y-Fan the highest mountain south of Snowdonia, and the spectacular ‘Waterfall Country’ tucked away in forested gorges.
The route – From Abergavenny take the A40 along the Usk Valley to Brecon. Head south-west on the A470, past north side of Pen-y-Fan and turn right on to the A4059 to Hirwaun. The A465, A4109 and A4221 take you along the southern edge of the National Park. After short stretches of the A4067 and
A4068, you’ll reaach the A4069 noth to LLangadog.
Top Tip – The A4069 or ‘Black Mountain Road’ is a sweeping mountain pass known as ‘Top Gear Road’ by locals, after Jeremy Clarkson raved about this ‘great driving road’ during the TV show.
Pitstop – Tucked away above the A4059, The Red Lion is a popular spot.
